The European Parliament, Our Ally

January 21st, 2019|

We can’t stress enough the urgency for young people to have access to Comprehensive Sexuality Education. So YouAct members are organizing yet another round of meetings with the Members of the European Parliament (MEPs)! We want to engage in meaningful conversations on how to advance this topic forward and how we can work together more efficiently. “The European Parliament, Our Ally” project aims to facilitate discussions between youth advocates and decision-makers regarding the importance for young people to have access to sexual and reproductive health and rights information, education, and services, including CSE. Why? Because CSE is essential for health and well-being. Evidence shows that CSE interventions have the following outcomes: HIV knowledge increase, condom use increase, increased self-efficacy for HIV protection and improved attitudes related to HIV prevention. And we believe that access to CSE is a prerequisite to ensure that young people’s sexual and reproductive health and rights [...]

Evidence-based Advocacy: Championing SexEd in Europe

January 21st, 2019|

YouAct together with CHOICE for Youth and Sexuality is in the concluding stages of the second phase of an advocacy project aiming to advance Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) in Europe. The first phase of the project was implemented in 2017 and involved a research phase in five countries, Cyprus, Georgia, the Netherlands, Poland and Romania (the results are available here), followed by advocacy actions, both at national level. Several infographics were also developed in English, as well as in national languages and have been disseminated on social media as part of an online campaign #Unite4CSE. With the second phase of the project, we aimed to further empower youth to become CSE advocates. Through face-to-face meetings, we planned to influence the European decision-makers to ensure the implementation of qualitative CSE for all young people in Europe, in line with the recently updated UNESCO International Technical Guidance on Sexuality Education. Furthermore, youth [...]

Contraception Atlas White Paper Launch in the European Parliament

October 5th, 2018|

To celebrate World Contraception Day (26th September), MEP Biljana Borzan and MEP Maria Gabriela Zoana co-hosted the European Parliament launch of ‘Limited Access: Europe’s Contraception Deficit’, a White Paper on Access to Contraception in Europe. The White Paper was developed following a survey of 46 European countries titled “Contraception Atlas” covering three areas: reimbursement of contraceptive supplies, access to family planning counselling and access to online information on modern contraception methods. Based on the conclusions of this research, the group of experts supported by EPF launched the White Paper, which is a call to action and provides recommendations on how to improve access to contraception in Europe. YouAct Coordinator, Adriana Pereira, was invited to make a speech on behalf of Youth in Europe and address the importance of access to contraceptives for young people. Adriana focused on the importance of addressing affordability as a main obstacle for young people accessing [...]

Intervention at the UNECE Regional Conference on ICPD+25

October 2nd, 2018|

Adriana Pereira, the Coordinator of YouAct – European Youth Network on Sexual and Reproductive Rights made the following intervention during the UNECE Regional Conference on ICPD+25. Thank you chairperson and panel for your insights into families and SRH over the life-course. On behalf of a few youth organizations here today, we would like to address and highlight WHAT has NOT been said in this thematic session. Women and girls, disproportionately bear the burden of managing their reproductive lives.  While men and LGBTQI+ individuals are often not equally equipped with information and resources to play their part in preventing unintended pregnancies and transmission of STIs, Including HIV. When we talk about contraception, its prevalence and the unmet need, we must include men and LGBTQI+ community rights in the process! From the Contributions yesterday and today, there have been many positive examples of expanding SRH services and people’s right. However, more can [...]

This is how a south-south intersectional dialogue on sexual and reproductive justice looks like

July 1st, 2018|

By Anamaria Suciu, YouAct Chair In the beginning of June 2018, 22 feminists met in Kuala Lumpur to have a cross‐regional south-south feminist intersectional dialogue on sexual and reproductive justice in the context of the sustainable development agenda. The meeting was organized by Realizing Sexual and Reproductive Justice (RESURJ) with the aim of creating a space to deepen our analysis and strategize around the 2030 sustainable development agenda, as well as to connect and build cross-regional alliances with younger feminists from Africa, Asia, Latin America, Pacific, Middle East and Europe. YouAct was invited to bring a youth perspective from Europe, a donor-region where North-South dichotomy persists regarding issues related to sexual and reproductive justice. For 3 full days we shared lessons learnt and best practices regarding organizing, identified regional trends and challenges, as well as similarities and differences in our ways of working and opportunities in staying connected. We focused [...]

Youth Against Online Discrimination Study Session

April 15th, 2018|

By Anja, YouAct member From the 19th to the 23rd of March, I had the pleasure of representing YouAct at the study session “Youth Against Online Discrimination”, which took place at the European Youth Centers in Strasbourg. The study session was organised by Youth Sexual Awareness for Europe (YSAFE) in partnership with the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and Intersex Youth and Student Organisation (IGLYO) and the Digital Leadership Institute (DLI) with support of the Youth Department of the Council of Europe. The study session had the purpose of enabling young people to understand intersectionality and identify and address discrimination online. The five-day study session was divided into sessions which focused on familiarizing participants with the international human rights frameworks, defining discrimination and intersectionality, talking about hate speech, learning about digital skills and cyber security and finally, working on project development. During the study session, I specifically appreciated the [...]

Busting Abortion Stigma with inroads

March 30th, 2018|

By Camila, YouAct member Last week I entered a beautiful, stigma-free world: where people have access to legal, safe, and free abortions, where your economic situation, nationality, gender, disability, race, religion or age don’t limit your access to healthcare, where you don’t have to justify your decision to continue or end a pregnancy, where having the right to make your own decisions over your body is a given, where your emotions and feelings are taken seriously, and where diversity is celebrated. This world was the inroads Global Gathering, which took place in Zagreb from the 12th to 16th of March 2018. I was invited to the inroads Global Gathering to present YouAct’s work on stigma busting through the ‘Speak My Language’ Project: two toolkits that explain abortion stigma with a focus on Eastern Europe and show how storytelling can be an incredibly empowering and effective tool to bust stigma. Throughout the [...]

YouAct’s Participation in the UN ECE Regional Forum for Sustainable Development

March 6th, 2018|

From the 28th of February to the 2nd of March, Anja Pedersen has participated in the UN ECE Regional Forum of Sustainable Development (RFSD) in Geneva, as the representative of YouAct. The forum is one of two regional reviews of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in our region. The other review is undertaken by the European Union. One key difference consists in that the UN ECE region is larger than the EU and includes the Balkans, Israel, Central Asia, Russia Canada and the US. The Chair’s note, the outcome document of the meeting, is submitted to the High Level Political Forum (HLPF), the forum of the global review of the SDSGs, which place at the UN headquarter in New York. The structure of the RFSD mirrors that of the HLPF in the sense that five goals are up for review each year, while goals 17 on partnership is reviewed every [...]
